The great reopening is here and schedules are filling up fast. There’s so much excitement to see the many friends, family, and loved ones who we haven’t been with in such a long time. But walking is about taking a little time out of a hectic day to make some space for yourself. Your thoughts. Your reflections. So this week, a simple question: How are you making time for your walks?
Fortunately, I have a high energy puppy and no yard and live in place where it's 80 degrees by 7am in the summer, so getting up early to walk is not really a choice (which is great, because my choice would be to stay in bed). Apparently, I will have to have a dog for the rest of my life.
In summer I schedule my daily walks around sunlight and weather. I go for a walk or run in the morning (Prospect Park) before the heat sets in at 9am. After 5pm when Ive done a proper amount of work the day starts to cool the light is particularly beautiful in Green Wood Cemetery. Sitting by the pond and reading has become a highlight of my day. <3
For awhile my dog (in my little icon there) forced me to walk regularly. I still have to take him outside, of course, but he's getting older and doesn't have the energy for long walks. So I just have to carve out time. Luckily, while we're getting busier, there's still usually an hour or two unaccounted for in the evenings where I can take a stroll. Thank goodness for summer - this is much harder when the sun sets at 4:45.
It's really all about getting up really early in the summer and just being committed to getting out the door — and for a number of reasons, that seems much harder than it was last summer. Not everyone is experiencing excitement and parties.
Oh, I full on knocked family dinner back an hour to take advantage of the lingering summer sunlight. We eat supper at 8pm now—I bought snacks to tide everyone over. My planned on morning walks have yet to materialize due to...myself being in charge of enforcing them, but hope/motivation springs eternal in the human heart, etc etc.
